The Energy Show which is now in its tenth year is taking place on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th April in the RDS, Main Hall, Dublin and we’ve got our tickets already. We have visited this event in the past and as usual the SEI are planning another great show. There are exhibitors from a vast range of sectors that can help reduce the engery use and therefore the energy cost.

The current trend in the media with ads on all the TV channels for “cash” for gold, has had the effect on the number of house break-ins where the only reason for the break in is the removal of gold. It is seen as an easy target, a quick and easy item to walk away with.

Therefore it is in your interest to have your intruder alarm system serviced and in good working order and where you don’t yet have and alarm system installed, we urge you to have a system installed.

We remind you that when having an intruder alarm system installed to make sure that the installer is a registered and licenced contractor - licenced by the PSA, Private Security Authority.

Cold Snap!

The cold snap is having a terrible effect on the water pipes in homes and business premises around the country, both with pipes freezing and bursting. We can suggest that if you have a light fitting in your attic, where your water tank is located to leave the fitting switched on during the night. The heat generated from the light bulb with take the chill from the attic space and reduce the possibility of water pipes from freezing.

If however you don’t have a light fitting in your attic, can we suggest that you look into having this work carried out. As the cost and distribution caused by burst water pipes is really something to avoid.

A soloution for frozen water pipes is the use of a blow heater or a hair-dryer.

Service contracts.

Someone posed the question “how many times a year or how often should I get my intruder alarm system serviced?” The answer is “It depends”, the environment in which the alarms system operates will impact on how often the system requires to be serviced. If the system is giving a number of false alarm activations then there is a reason for the activations and this should be investigated.

A newly installed alarm may in certain circuminstances require attention when the sensitivity of the sensors might require adjustment, outside influnces that can impact the operation of a system would be heavy passing traffic or even barking dogs.

It is however recommended that domestic systems be checked at least once per year, among the parts of the system that may require attention is the battery. The battery is one part of the intruder alarm system that is vital, this will enable the system to operate even in the event of a power failure. The lenght of time that it will operate for will however depend on the battery.

Kickboard lighting

Kickboard lighting adds atmosphere to modern kitchens, the lights in the picture below are white LED lights which also come in blue.

This is a great way to make a statement in a kitchen, but they also look great in other locations. Pelmet lighting is the lights that are placed underneath the pelmet, they are great for throwing light onto the working surface of the kitchen workspace.

SEI Grants

Sustainable Energy Ireland have a great little gadget that I picked up recently at the Ideal Homes Show at the RDS in Dublin, its about the size to a post card and it reads the tempreature in your home.

The idea being if its too hot then reduce the temperature, if its too cold have your home assessed to have it insulated or have your heating system upgraded. SEI can help on that front also with grants available for some of these types of work to be carried out. For further information check out the site at this link

Doing business

We showcased our range of electrical services at the Johnstown Business Fair recently. At which we launched our latest service available. We demonstrated the Smarthomes system and had a hub on display for the duration of the fair. There was a lot of interest in this piece of equipment, mostly from the lads I have to say.

Blog Action Day 2009

Today is Blog Action Day, when bloggers from around the world all write about one topic for one day. This year that topic is Climate Change. We believe that it is a problem and everyone should do their part to reduce the impact that we all have on this planet.
By taking action in our own homes and places of work, starting today we can have a positive impact and can save some money also. As we are electrical contractors we have focused on savings that can be made when conserving electricity. We have already suggested some of these in the past from a money and time saving aspect.

Turn off your lights when you don’t need them on, how many times do we walk from one room to the next and leave the lights on, there is a soloution to this in the form of latching sensors which when installed will automatically switch the lighting off when an area is unoccupied, dim the lighting when there is sufficient sunlight, switch the ligthing on when you enter the room or area.
If you’re not using an appliance, unplug it or have some switched sockets fitted and switch off when not in use.
Fit a time clock to your immersion for hot water when you need it.
Have an electric shower fitted it uses less water than a bath.
Understand your thermostat and turn it down two degrees in Winter and up two degrees in Summer.

Johnstown Expo

We took part in Johnstown Business Expo which was held last weekend at Johnstown Business Centre, Johnstown, Naas. We officially launched our new service to the public, as an approved Smarthomes installer. A Smarthomes hub was on display over the weekend to demonstrate the look and feel of the system, there was great interest in this piece of equipment.
